It started with a red dog watching brook trout in a stream.
In 2002 hiking in the Little Lakes Basin in the Sierra Nevada we came upon a group of hikers with their dogs. Other dogs in the group were running around and splashing in the water. But that sleek red dog went up and down the clear stream, tracking the fish through the reflections. That little vizsla captured our imagination. We were hooked.
It wasn’t until 2017 that we moved to a rental that allowed dogs. Though we’d discussed other breeds over the years, we couldn’t get away from that plucky fish-pointer. In August 2017, we brought Mariposa home to our yellow foursquare house in Rochester, New York, and named her for a little flower that grows in the valley where we were introduced to Vizslas.
We didn’t know it at the time, but that decision would change everything. She wasn’t a puppy that could be content without a job (or several). So, we started exploring the world of dog sports. Mariposa has been a Canine Good Citizen, Trick Dog, and Junior Hunter. She does Agility, Rally, and Fast CAT, and dabbles in dog shows, scent work, mantrailing, farm dog, and (sometimes) walking nicely on a loose leash.
She’s introduced us to so many amazing dogs and their humans and taken us on a journey we never imagined.
One of the amazing people we met because of Mariposa is Ritu Mihir of Shikari Vizslas, who bred Bramble. With Bramble, we were finally able to dive head-first into Field Trials and Conformation. She only needs a few singles to finish her show championship and has field trial points from puppy and derby wins. Bramble is on the string of Seabank Kennel competing in field trials during the season. In the off-season, she can be found in the show ring, on agility courses, or on a favorite trail or two in the woods.
We're so grateful for all those on this journey with us as we preserve the Dual Vizsla. We want a versatile, correctly structured dog who can hunt all day, look gorgeous doing it, and be a lovely companion in your home for many years.
We're proud to be active members of The Vizsla Club of America, Vizsla Club of Central New England, Connecticut Valley Vizsla Club, and the Sleeping Giant Agility Club of CT. We're located in Hamden, Connecticut, taking our dogs on daily hikes, outings, training, and exploring to keep our pups mentally and physically fit. We'd love to meet you and have you meet our girls. Let's find a time and take a hike!
